As the girls summer gymnastics program at Michigan Academy of Gymnastics winds down, I have to often remind them to measure their enjoyment on their over all experience each week and not just on the ropes that they have climbed. With that usually being the final event of the session (and the thing that they get certificates or medals for), I think that its natural for them to judge their success or failure for the day, on whether they climbed to the ceiling on the next hardest rope, but I fear that they are forgetting about all that they are learning to do, the progress that they have made, and all of their little successes each week.
Both of the girls have enjoyed it enough to want to enroll again, so last week I signed them up for fall sessions. It means that we will be there from 5:30 until 9:00 each Monday, but it will give each of them time to do their homework, give me some 1:1 time with each of them, and give them more time to contemplate those darn ropes!
