Ta-da!

If there is a silver lining to the closing of the girls' school, it's that the PTA went all out on one final fanfare and had the folks from Cirque Amongus come to the school for a Henry Ruff Circus.   Although times are different these days, I suspect that every child, at some point, still dreams of running away to join the circus.   If those those dreams can be fulfilled (albeit for only a day), and if as their website suggests "...Cirque Amongus offers hands-on programs designed to build self-esteem, develop motor skills, and promote teamwork.", then what better memory to leave the last of Henry Ruff's student with?

I had some experience with the group on a much smaller scale from years ago when Riley participated in
their program at the metorparks, but couldn't wait to see the show on a grander scale.  So when they asked for volunteers, I leaped at the chance to participate.

In the morning, as group leader, I got to take the girls and a small group of students to different stations where they tried out different circus skills such as tight-rope walking, wacky bicycle riding, trapeze, jugging, etc.  Despite the hot, humid day, and even with all of the excitement, the kids were great and enthusiastically tried out all of the different activities.   After lunch, they got to pick a single activity and spend the afternoon mastering it for the big performance at the end of the day.   Kennedy decided that she wanted to be part of the juggling act, and always shy (lol) Riley, held out for one of the Ringmaster positions.  After a rush through wardrobe and makeup, it was time for the show!

Assembled in three rings on the playground, the children demonstrated their new talents while the audience of other students, teacher, and parents eagerly cheered them on.  Kennedy got to do a special trick that she had practiced all afternoon, and nailed it perfectly.   Riley got to introduce three acts, and although she said that she messed up her lines, I think that she did fine.

Nearly 500 children had a great time and had the opportunity fulfill those circus dreams, and for at least one adult that was there... those dreams were rekindled a little bit.
