Earth Day Festival

Due to an unexpected emergency in the choreographer's family, the girls theater workshops were cancelled today. They were a little disappointed as they expected to find out what their roles in the musicals are, but deciding to make lemonade out of lemons, we found something fun to do and went to the Earth Day Festival today in Monroe.

The festival was held indoors at a nearby church today because of threatening rain, and it was packed. There were all kinds of different vendors and groups with lots of earth friendly ideas and products, entertainment, and free food.   The girls really enjoyed a story time and the nature exhibit that was sponsored by the The Academy Preserve.   Their group has an ambitious and fantastic goal to purchase 120 acres of land that was previously part of St. Mary's Academy and ensure that remains undeveloped and available as green-space available to the public.

For me, I think that the highlight of the festival was the music of Joe Reilly (the local activist, poet, songwriter, and Leslie Science Center educator) and having an opportunity to talk with him after his performance.   I left there with one of his older Cd's and look forward to catching  more of his performances.
