Huron River day

This morning we headed to Ann Arbor for Huron River Day -- an annual event held to heighten the awareness and appreciation of the Huron River and the recreational opportunities that it offers.

We had morning reservations for a two hour canoe trip that was to be led by a naturalist and planned to spend the afternoon enjoying the other programs that were being offered such as crafts, geocaching, storytelling, etc.   Unfortunately traffic and construction in the area made us miss the departure of the group so we were on our own.   Although I was disappointed at first, the afternoon couldn't have gone better.

After canoeing for about an hour, we stopped at an island park for lunch.   The girls played in the river, and on the swings.  We found a geocache on the island, and enjoyed watching a rehearsal of the Society for Creative Anachronism.  Their group recreates middle age activities such as historical fencing, dancing, singing, clothing, martial arts, feasts, arts and sciences and courtly behavior.   Today, we watched them practice fencing.

We played for a while in the river before heading again down the river.  Once we reached Gallup park, we enjoyed the butterfly exhibit, made some pine cone bird feeders, and played in the park for a while.   It was our first visit to the annual program, but I am sure that it will become an annal event for us.

Oh, and since the date was 7/11, we stopped on the way home to grab one of their free Slurpees.
